An earlier map of Xinjiang compiled in 1762 at the orders of the Chinese Emperor Qianlong acknowledged the southern border of Xinjiang at Kunlun. This placed Shaksgam, Raskam and Aghil valleys within the Gilgit-Baltistan region. However, Pakistan handed over 5,800 square kilometers of the territory of Gilgit-Baltistan to China without the consent of the local people, under the Sino-Pak Boundary Agreement of 1963.
